You have to be at least twenty one years old to join freemasonry.
You must believe in a supreme being to be a Freemason. We won’t ask about religion, that is personal to you.
To join you must be of good character with no criminal convictions. If you’re not sure what counts and what doesn’t, ask us.
The number of meetings per year varies from lodge to lodge, but you might expect at least six full meetings per year, together with two, three or four less formal rehearsal, learning and social meetings a month. Health warning. Freemasonry can become addictive and many Freemasons belong to several lodges or additional masonic orders.
Whilst not disproportionately expensive, there is a cost to Freemasonry (Joining fee. regular lodge subscription, dining fee, regalia) and it is important that you factor that into your consideration. Whilst each lodge differs in cost, you should anticipate paying somewhere in the region of £200 to £250 per year (to include dining after a meeting).
Freemasonry is open to people from all walks of life, regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation or socio-economic position in society.
For many, Freemasonry is about making new friends and acquaintances. For others, it’s about being able to help deserving causes and charities. It’s a unique institution with a truly global membership.
Sussex Freemasons support those in need in our Sussex communities, from food banks to Scout groups, from dementia care to hospice support.
